The Archipelbuurt is a neighborhood in the center of The Hague, also known as the Indische Buurt. It borders neighborhoods such as Willemspark, Benoordenhout, Zorgvliet, Van Stolkpark, and Scheveningse Bosjes. The Archipelbuurt was developed between 1860 and 1890 on the former estate of Duinweide. The area features many buildings in the Neo-Renaissance style, which was very popular in the Netherlands at the end of the 19th century.
A bit of history about the Archipelbuurt
The Archipelbuurt in The Hague has many courtyards. The most special and oldest courtyard is the Mallemolen. This courtyard dates back to the late 18th century (during the time of Napoleon). Back then, it was inhabited by soldiers. Logically, the courtyard got its name from the mill, which lost three of its sails shortly after it was built. Over time, several famous Dutch people have lived here, including Paul van Vliet and Godfried Bomans. One of the most famous Dutch writers, Louis Couperus, also lived in the Archipelbuurt. Louis lived at Nassauplein 4 and Surinamestraat 20. In 2007, the Louis Couperus Museum opened on Javastraat. This house was built by his father. Louis Couperus wrote his novel Eline Vere there.
